Plumbing in Streator, IL is a long drive from our Washington base: about 49 miles and an hour, finishing on Illinois Route 18 or 23. Call first, since we have to say whether and when a van can get to you, and emergency response is not something we promise out here. Streator's glass-and-coal era housing makes sewer cleaning, camera inspection and scheduled repairs the right fit.

Streator Plumbing in Glass-and-Coal Era Homes

Streator was a coal town for about a century, and glassmaking at Owens-Illinois, which opened its plant in 1916, gave it a second industry. The housing is old: 1,966 of 6,119 homes, 32%, date to 1939 or earlier, and the 1950s are the largest building decade (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024).

Streator also made brick, tile and pipe from local clay, so the oldest blocks likely sit on clay laterals with a joint every few feet. Roots reach those joints, and scale narrows cast iron from inside. Postwar blocks mix cast iron, clay and later plastic repairs.

Coal Under Most of Town and What It Means for Laterals

State mine records, citing a local history, say most of Streator was undermined by 1900, and mining in the area lasted until the Streator Clay Pipe Mine closed in 1961. Ground movement can pull a buried joint apart, so a lateral that keeps sagging deserves a camera. LaSalle County is one of 34 Illinois counties where property policies include subsidence coverage unless the owner rejected it in writing, so find out where yours stands.

Not every hole is a mine, either. A 2019 backyard sinkhole on Bluff Street turned out to be an abandoned sewer drop, with pipes from several homes running to it and falling into a closed mine (Shaw Local). A state expert said it was not part of the mining operation. If a camera run heads somewhere the street main does not, stop and ask before anyone digs.

Combined Sewers, Coal Run and the Circle Drive Extension

Streator still has combined sewers, where storm water and sewage share a pipe. Its long-term plan with the Illinois EPA aims to eliminate all of them by 2050, and the Coal Run separation project is part of that work (Shaw Local). Until your street is done, heavy rain can reach a basement floor drain, so keep belongings up off that floor.

In September 2025 the council approved annexation agreements for the Circle Drive subdivision, including Capri Street and Monterey Drive. The city is to build a sewer within five years, split evenly with residents at an estimated $3.3 million to $4 million, and existing septic systems will be abandoned on connection. Homeowners there should ask the city about timing before spending on a tank or drain field.

Vermilion River Water From a Private Utility

Streator sits on the Vermilion River, which feeds the Illinois River. Illinois American Water, not the city, treats river water for the tap and added a $4.27 million ultraviolet disinfection system in 2023. Hardness depends on the supply, so check the utility's annual water quality report.

Illinois Routes 18 and 23, About an Hour Out

IL 18 meets I-39 at Lostant, a dozen miles west of Streator, and IL 23 crosses it downtown. The mileage above is an estimate, and we pick the approach by traffic. An hour each way is a real cost, so a call first saves everyone a wasted trip.

“Just a superb experience in quality and customer service and price. Called these guys at 5:30p and they were here by 6:00p and Monte did his work in the dark by flashlight! Not only did he do a fantastic job he also educated us on how to prevent these problems from becoming a much bigger and more expensive issue. I would recommend this company to anyone, they are committed to doing a professional job, ensuring it is done right and with very affordable prices.”

“Monte and Hunter came out on a Sunday (morning no less!) to help us with a mess from a backed up sewer. Lots of roots! They used two different sized cutters with a monster snake and cleaned it out all the way to the city sewer. We'd had another "sewer service" a few weeks ago and the experience was night and day different. I definitely recommend them.”

Plumbing Questions in Streator

Who supplies water in Streator, and who do I call about a main break?
Illinois American Water, a private utility, supplies Streator's drinking water from the Vermilion River, so a water main problem goes to that company. Sewer collection falls to the city's Public Works department, listed at 815-672-2517. The pipes inside your house and the sewer lateral to the street are normally the owner's, and that is the part we can help with.
Can you reach Streator for a backed-up drain?
Call first. Streator is about 49 miles and 60 minutes from our base, and we cannot promise emergency response there. Describe which fixtures are slow or rising and give us the address, and we will say whether we can come and on what day. Until then, avoid running water, since each flush adds to what is coming up.
Do older Streator homes have clay sewer lines?
Often, in the oldest blocks. About a third of Streator's homes predate 1940, and the town made brick, tile and pipe from local clay, so clay laterals are likely. Clay joints let roots in. A camera inspection shows what you actually have before you spend money on a repair, and it gives you a record to keep.
