Plumbing in Bloomington, IL is a long drive from our Washington base: about 32 miles and 40 minutes east on I-74. Call first so we can tell you whether and when we can reach you, and do not count on emergency response from us. What sets the city apart is its older core, where combined storm and sanitary sewers back up when heavy rain fills the main.
Plumbing in Bloomington: Combined Sewers and Pre-1940 Blocks
About 15% of Bloomington's housing, 5,666 of 37,162 units, dates to 1939 or earlier (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). Many of those blocks sit on combined sewers, where storm water and household waste share one pipe. In June 2021 the city logged more than 500 damage reports after heavy rain, and its public works director blamed part of that on combined-sewer backups (WGLT).
The city is separating storm and sanitary lines in phases, including the Locust-Colton project by the high schools. That helps, but it does not reach every street. When a combined main runs full, the lowest drain in a house shows it first, usually the basement floor drain.
Timing tells you a lot here. A backup that arrives only in heavy rain points at the main, while one on a dry day points at your own lateral. WGLT reported in 2019 that owners answer for damage up to the main, including the connection, so a dry-weather blockage is usually a private bill.

I-74 East, Then a Call Before You Book
Our route is I-74 east through Morton and Goodfield to Bloomington's exits, 130 to 134. It is about 32 miles, and a crash or construction zone on the interstate moves the arrival time, so we give a window rather than a promise.
Calling first lets us answer faster. Have these ready:
- The street address and nearest cross street
- Which drains are slow, gurgling or rising
- Whether a cleanout is reachable, indoors or in the yard
- Whether rain fell before it started

Work We Would Plan for Bloomington Homes

Lake Levels, Earthy Taste and Lead Lines West of Veterans Parkway
Surface water brings problems that well towns never see. The city switches between its two lakes, and in 2025 residents noticed an earthy taste from naturally occurring compounds called geosmin and MIB, which officials class as a nuisance, not a health concern. The plant added powdered activated carbon. In January 2026 the city asked for voluntary conservation after the lakes fell more than 8 feet below adequate levels in a severe drought (WGLT).
Lead is the longer job. The city estimated about 5,700 lead service lines, many in older neighborhoods west of Veterans Parkway, plus about 8,900 listed as unknown, and it plans a 10-year replacement program (WGLT, 2025). Interior plumbing stays with the owner, per the city's FAQ, so ask the Water Department what its program covers before paying anyone to replace that line.
Lake-Fed Water and Who Owns the Sewer
Bloomington's water comes from Lake Bloomington and Evergreen Lake, not wells. The Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District treats the sewage, while the city maintains the collection sewers under the street. The private line from your house out to the main is typically yours to maintain. The city's billing page lists optional leak and line protection, so read its current terms before a repair comes up.
Any plumber who touches that line needs an Illinois license, so ask for the number and verify it on the IDPH lookup. Next door, Normal keeps its own sewers, and McLean County lists both.

What Customers Say About Us

“Monte and Hunter came out on a Sunday (morning no less!) to help us with a mess from a backed up sewer. Lots of roots! They used two different sized cutters with a monster snake and cleaned it out all the way to the city sewer. We'd had another "sewer service" a few weeks ago and the experience was night and day different. I definitely recommend them.”
“Gary at Professional Sewer & Drain Services successfully bailed me out of a backed up sewer multiple times. Great guy and reasonable rates - very trustworthy!”
“Called at 4pm, clean out was finished by 7:30! Very reasonably priced. Monty was great!”
